Hi,

I am reviewing the vendor’s WPS/PQR on FCAW welding process. I need your help.

Shielding gas is not used in the PQR. However in the WPS, CO2 is used as the shielding gas for FCAW process. Suppose the other parameters are the same, can we use this PQR to support the WPS?

ASME IX 408.2 (d) (Essential Variable): a separate procedure qualification is required for the following condition: the addition or omission of shielding gas.

ASME IX 408.1 (Non-Essential Variable): the addition or deletion of trailing shielding gas and/or a change in its composition.

Based on the Essential Variable ASME IX 408.2 (d), we can not use this PQR to support the WPS. How to understand Non-Essential Variable ASME IX 408.1?

Please advise.

engineermat;
First off, you need to go to Article II in ASME Section IX and review the essential variables for FCAW. In QW-255 for shielding gas for FCAW/GMAW, you have only three essential variables QW-408.2, 9 and 10. If none of these essential variables applies to gas shielding for FCAW, this means you can support a WPS with or without shielding gas for FCAW.

engineermat;
I hit the submit button to quick. Since QW-408.2 is an essential variable in QW-255 and 2(d) does apply. You would need to have a new PQR with gas shielding to support a WPS with gas shielding for FCAW.
