Date Issued: 08/24/2017
Record Number: 17-747
Interpretation Number : BPV IX-17-50
Question(s) and Reply(ies):
Question: May a WPS that is qualified for a maximum weld deposit thickness of 0.464 inch be used to qualify a welder for the maximum to be welded using a 0.625 inch weld test coupon?
Reply: No.

Unless you have a welding procedure qualified to weld up to 1.25" or 3" maximum, you cannot qualify a welder at 1.25" or qualify him to weld up to 3". Welders qualified on 3/4" thickness (I believe 1/2 " now - do not have access to current ASME IX) are qualified to weld unlimited thickness provided a minimum of 3 weld layers (passes) are applied during qualification.
A welder may not weld beyond the WPS qualified thickness unless he is welding a PQR test coupon for qualifying a WPS.

The interpretation provided is an example of the welder exceeding the WPS limits. However, as weldstan pointed out, welding 1/2" or more deposit thickness (with at least 3 layers) can get the welder qualified for unlimited thickness. And welding a 1/2 deposit sounds like it would be within the limits of the WPS in question. So it seems feasible to do the qualification with the WPS in question provided all other variables are acceptable.

As per welding procedure , welder is qualified up to 1" or production.
If welder do test coupon 1" by using above procedure then he should qualified to 2".
Please advice.

If all you are trying to do is qualify your welder to a greater thickness, test your welder on a 1/2" coupon. This will qualify for unlimited thickness..."Max to be welded".
See Table QW-452.1(b)
As others have stated, 3 layers minimum required.

stan3126,
If a welder qualifies on a 1" coupon with at least 3 layers deposited, he is also qualified to weld unlimited thicknesses; however, he may not weld beyond the thickness established in the WPS.
