Dear Tank Builders,

This should be Welding Engineer scope of Work.

But I would like to know of there is any quick reference about how many passes to weld bottom plate A 283 C / A 36 9 mm thick ? Each pass should be xx mm electrode and EXXXXX of electrode. Let say for 9 mm plate the root pass 2.4 mm E 6012 then 3.2 mm filler then 3.2 mm capping.

Thanks for any comments.

Depends on the method - hand with stick, semi-automatic with a "goat" etc. Check API 650 5.1.3.6.1

Typically, two passes for the Shell-to-floor weld 'chime'.
Typically, one pass of 7024 5/32" 4mm [or larger] for floor-to-floor lap welds. Thus the mandatory Vacuum Box testing of the floor welds.

There are certain requirements of the API standard for multi-pass welding on bottom and corner welds. But it would also depend on your weld procedures, equipment available, etc. And in some cases, owners have other requirements.
