Dear experts,

I wonder if there is a guidance for how many passes required to weld plate to plate.

For example A283C bottom plate 10 mm to be lap welded to 10 mm bottom plate. Root pass would be 2.4 mm EXXXXX + filler 3.2 mm EXXXX + capping 2.4 mm Exxxx etc.

Maybe it is depend on WPS / PQR ?

For guidance, check API 650 12th Ed, Section 5.1.3. For group I, II, and III (A283 is Group I), manual welds greater than 6 mm shall be multipass, and semi-automatic welds greater than 10 mm shall be multipass. So you need to consider if you are welding using manual process such as SMAW? OR, semi-automatic process such as wire feed FCAW?

Then you can consider the WPS(s) to be used on the lap joint.

Hope this helps-

It depends on the process, the people, the equipment, the position, and supplies available. It may be limited by the WPS/PQR, but not necessarily mandated by the WPS.
