Hello All,

Currently I am looking into ways of capping the ends of four large corrugated metal pipes with diameters of 30", 36", 36" and 42" so that they may be slurry filled and abandoned. I am thinking a good way to close the ends of these pipes would be to welded them shut, but I want to bounce that idea around and see what comes back. I don't see any documentation explicitly not permitting welding a plug or cap onto the end of a large CMP. Thoughts?

I've done underground detention systems in CMP by welding them into a manifold, so I know it can be done. I don't like to do detention in CMP for durability reasons, but the client gets what the client wants.

Seems like there'd be an easier way if you're just going to pump them full of slurry anyway. Can you just bury them first and let the fill be a coffer dam for the slurry?

brick and mortar plug is the standard method

If a brick and mortar plug is standard is there a resource I can use to determine the thickness of the plug? We have some decently long pipes (600' max) with gentle grades of roughly 3 to 7 %.

Great reference cvg! Thank you.

Ultimately the decision to grout the entire length of culvert is not mine. The culverts go through a landfill termination plug and were designed to be temporary so as to allow surface run off to exit the "bowl." We want to avoid any void spaces behind the liner. The length of the void space is arguable.

Thank you all for your input. I appreciate it.
