I need to weld some 304 stainless to AR steel.

I plan to use ER70S-6 wire and 75/25 gas.

This will be a fillet weld and will not be a load bearing weld.

I have been told that this will crack and fail, What are your thoughts?

You should NOT use this filler metal for joining 304 to AR plate. The AR (abrasion resistant) plate is a low alloy steel, and using a carbon steel filler metal, such as ER70S-6, will result in cracks after solidification.

You need to use either ER 309 or Inconel (Ni-base filler metal).

There is nothing to add when the answer is correct and complete.
Use 309.

Is calculation of the strength of the weld the same as AISC provides except using the properties of 309 for this application?
