Hi!

I wonder how I can interpret intermittent welding symbol, 3-5.
I think everybody agrees its welding length is 3 and its spacing is 5.
How about its exact locations?
In my opinion, all interpretations are correct.
(This means this notation method does not sometimes work.)

I am looking forward other opinions.

Thanks!

I believe that you're right that all interpretations are right.

As far as I understand, a 2-6 weld could start with 2"weld--gap--2"weld--gap, etc. OR start with gap--2"weld--gap--2"weld, etc. OR maybe start with 1/2gap(at end only)--2"weld--gap--2"weld--gap--2"weld--1/2gap(at end only). Our QC manager agrees with that as well. Probably best left to the EOR to decide where s/he wants the weld to start and end, but I think a symbol "3-5" does not entirely answer the question.

For what it's worth, if the weld were stitched both sides and CL of weld increments were staggered, some of the confusion goes away because instead of Case A or Case B, you'd have Case A on one side but Case B on the other. I've not seen much single sided fillet welding, except where we make temporary attachments and the point then is to make it EASY to break the welded attachmemnt off with a hammer.

The length of the unwelded portion at the end shouldn't exceed the length of the unwelded portion between segments, per AWS A2.4 (Standard Symbols for Welding, Brazing, and Nondestructive Examination). So Case B is not OK - the gap between welds is 2", and the gap at the end is 2.5". Case A, C, and D all look OK. Case D would be preferable over C in my mind, since the welds are centered on the joint, but I don't know if this is actually required.

But who ever looks at AWS A2.4? When in doubt, throw in a sketch to clarify the intent. If you're on the other side, trying to interpret someone's weld symbol, you should ask them.
