Hi All,

I am a fresh graduate, just graduated 3 months ago and have since been working in an oil and gas company. I have some questions regarding welding and like to seek some professional helps.

1. My manager told me welding is not done on AISI 41XX. May I ask why is that so? If that is the case, then my next question will be (2)

2. What are the materials that can use for welding?

3. The maximum permissible Carbon Equivalent value. I believe this is used in welding. Yes? No?

4. A colleague of mine requires weld repairs for his test flanges which are made of AISI 4130. My manager suggested to use 625 overlay. Is there any rational behind this?

I think I want to know more is, what kind of materials are suitable for welding process and why is it so.

I would suggest you search the internet for weldability of carbon and low alloy steels. There is plenty of good information. Doing this on your own will help you to dig deeper into welding processes, selection of filler metals for welding, precautions for welding and limitations. I suspect searching the information will answer most of the questions above. Read the information and come back with more specific questions.

Why can't you approach your manager about this and ask him the same questions?
This would show the manager you are keen and interested to learn.

4130 is commonly welded in the oil/gas field tubular products. It can be welded with a number of welding filler metals and low hydrogen welding processes.
If weld repairs to 4130 flanges are required because of corrosion, the use of E/ER NiCrMo-3 or other NI-CR-MO alloys may well be warranted.

European standard EN1011-2 gives thorough information about CE and weldability (and preheat, and H cracking, ...)
It might be wordt buying that one (or googling for a copy, perhaps...)
