WELDOLET TYPE TEE'S GROOVE's INSIDE NOT WELDED 1

Hai,

Here Attached the Inside photo of Weldolet Type Reducing Tee's.

Usually Weldolet have on outside fillet only this fittings am seeing first time. This is going to work as chilled water Network pipe line.

SIZE : DN 1100 mm x DN 50 mm & DN 1100 mm x DN 100 mm. ASTM A 234 WPB.(CUSTOMER REQUIREMENT : WELDOLET TEE'S)

My Question are below:

1. What to do properly myside to accept it? weld on shop?

2. Am Having Doubt this weldolet or Some thing Else.

3. Why WELDOLET used in pipe lines and where it is used?

First things first, the term Weld-O-Let is a trade name for an integrally reinforced branch fitting. Welding standards and codes such as ASME B31.3 do not reference trade names or brand names, so referring back to a code for the welding requirements for a weld-o-let is going to get you no where fast. You need to look for the generic requirements for the integrally reinforced fitting or you can also go to the manufacturer's website where they outline the proper welding needed to complete the welded joint.

Generally, the welds are complete joint penetration groove welds with reinforcing fillets. The size of the reinforcing fillet is dependent on the construction code. The fittings are typically forged and will fit a couple of different diameters of run pipe. The welder or fitter is supposed to hand fit the integrally branch fitting to ensure a uniform root opening between the run pipe and the fitting. Hand grinding is usually needed to ensure a uniform root face to improve the chances of the welder achieving the complete joint penetration required.

Once the groove is welded, a reinforcing fillet is added on top of the groove weld. As mentioned, the size of the reinforcing fillet is dependent on the construction code. Be aware that the codes often time specify the throat dimension rather than the leg dimension. The designer has to make the necessary calculation to convert the throat to leg size since that is how the fillet weld size is specified and measured.

The integrally reinforced branch fitting is used to eliminate the need for a reinforcement rind (pad)that would be required if a nipple rather than the integrally reinforced branch fitting was used. The idea is that the reinforcement replaces the metal lost from the run pipe when the hole was cut for the branch fitting.

Now I used the term integrally reinforced branch fitting as many times as possible so you would remember the generic name of the integrally reinforced branch fitting. Good luck.

The photograph included in the original post is not acceptable per ASME B31.1 or B31.2 pressure piping codes.

Thanks for your answer my senior in QC Dept told that weldolet used due to the too much size reduction of Running to Branch end size so weldolet only hold this sudden pressure reduction is it correct?

It isn't that the integrally reinforced branch will sustain the pressure. It is the fact that the integrally reinforced branch is as its name implies, reinforced to prevent the run pipe from rupturing due to the absence of pipe wall material where the hole is cut to receive the branch fitting.

If one was to use a nipple as the branch fitting, without reinforcement, it could under the right conditions weaken the run pipe such that the run pipe would be prone to failure. In such as case, the pipe nipple is reinforced by the placement of a reinforcement pad placed against the run pipe wall to reinforce it. The reinforcing ring essentially replaces the volume of run pipe (wall) that was removed to position the nipple.

The reinforced branch fitting is already reinforced such at the reinforcing ring is unnecessary thereby saving engineering time and production time by eliminating the need for the reinforcing ring.

The attached sketch is not to scale, it only purpose to better depict my description of the integrally reinforced branch fitting and the reinforcement that might be needed to reinforce the run pipe if a nipple was used for the branch.

Creeram, you should learn about reinforcement of openings and the limits of reinforcement detailed in the ASME codes on fired and unfired pressure vessels. Once learned, you'll feel more comfortable as to what is being said by the above responder.
