Dear All,

Does anyone know where I can find information on the differences between Zone I, Zone II and Safe Zone as applied to well heads?

Thanks in advance,

John McGrath

I'm not familiar with the terms Zone I, Zone II, and Safe Zone. It sounds like a local jurisdiction definition. API 6A (which derives its rules from the Texas Railroad Commission) uses 100 ppm H2S ROE (radius of exposure) and 500 ppm H2S ROE, these may correspond to what you're looking for.

Hush,

I have managed to find out a little bit more about it since I posted my request. In Europe we call the safety areas around a well head Zone 0, Zone I and Zone 2, in the US they are known as Divisions 1, 2 and 3 and it is all to do with electrical integrity rather that H2S safety for more information you may want to look at the following web sites.

Thanks for you help,

If you're looking for a hard copy, I have this:

API RP 500B
Classification of areas for electrical installations at drilling rigs and production facilities on land and on marine fixed and mobile platforms
(quite a title, eh?)

This is from API April 1977
