the field is continually evolving

in an operating environment, it is a combination of factors, factors that you cannot really learn in the class room, though the class certificate may help you gain entry,

if you are a quick learner with basic mechanical, electrical,& plumbing knowledge give the job a go,

ask to talk with the maintenence shop, you'll find out real quick where you and how you'll fit in, or if you even want to go that route

if you are a school boy predominantly, you'll have to go the software/computer route i.e. the current push in the market, unfortunately most of that work is outsourced to the lowest cost market and very difficult to land a starting slot

I once worked with a guy who came to our company from the Navy as an Instrument Technician. He was completely worthless. One day I asked him what kind of training he received from the Navy, turned out the title meant just that he went around tapping on boiler gauges with the back of a screwdriver and writing values on a clipboard.

"Will work for (the memory of) salami"

The same issues can be found at just about every level of education/every job type.. I've had a few Engineers with supposedly plenty of experience that were basically worthless too.

>he went around tapping on boiler gauges with the back of a screwdriver

He had to have some smarts if he knew the front from the back of a 'screwdriver' . . , :>)
