what does ceramic proppants do???

I've recently learned that spherical ceramic media (primarily made by Carbo Ceramics) are extensively used in oil and gas production as ceramic proppants.
Would anybody be kind enough to explain the role of this ceramic proppants in the oil/gas well?
And list of physical/chemical requirements of ideal ceramic proppants?
