I know this is a pretty stupid question...but i couldn't find a definition on the internet or in any of my books...what exactly is meant by 'Hot-Wrought'?

I want to use a material A576 Grade 1045 Hot Rolled for an 8" diameter round I need for a wheel.

But in the selection guide i am using, it list ASTM A576 - Steel Bars, Carbon, Hot-Wrought, Special Quality. - then it list properties for either normalized, annealed or as-rolled.

Help !! Thanks !!

I beileve that Hot-Wrought is the same as hot-rolled. As to the condition of the material you are starting with You'll have to have either a hzardness test done or a tensile pull.

Hot-wrought basically refers to hot working metals to shape them into final product form. The definition below pertains to hot working;

"Plastic deformation at temperatures sufficiently high for recovery and recrystallization to counteract strain hardening is termed hot working".

After hot working, the metal shape can be either annealed or normalized or even quenched and tempered, which can require reheating to a specific temperature, and cooled under controlled conditions.

Hot rolled is a final product form where after hot working, the product is cooled in air.

Wrought means worked into a shape, as opposed to metals that have been cast or drawn.

The definition we were taught in school for hot work(wrought) is when the metal/alloy is worked above the recrystallization temperature. metengr's response explains why the material is worked in this temperature range. Cold work can be at a temperature above ambient temperature but below the recrystallization temperature.
