In the NEC, Article 210.4, what is meant by a "yoke"? I can't seem to find a good definition anywhere.

Yoke: A clamp or similar piece that embraces two parts to hold or unite them in position.

Most commonly, this references two parts of a duplex receptacle where a break-off tab is used to serve them from two different hot wires (a "split-wire" receptacle). In this case, they must be served by a two-pole breaker or single-pole breakers with an approved handle tie so that both hot wires are disconnected at the same time.

Suggestion: Reference: IEEE Std 100-2000 Dictionary:
Yoke (rotating machinery) (magnetic) is the element of ferromagnetic material, not surrounded by windings, used to connect the cores of an electromagnet, or of a transformer, or the poles of a machine, or used to support the teeth of the stator or rotor.

This appears to be the closest definition to what is meant in the code. Simply: yoke=support=tie=etc.

Large transformer cores are commonly defined in the following way:
Legs = wound limbs = the section of core upon which the coils are mounted

Yoke = the sections of core joining the wound limbs

Normally' Legs can be considered to be the vertical parts and yokes the horizontally parts connecting the legs
