What is "Jomeny" in gear steel

I am dealing with an Indian source for a small gear and they have expressed issue with the "Jomeny" content in the material we have chosen. They relate that they are using a material with low "Jomeny" and that they will need to acquire a material with higher "Jomeny" to achieve the core hardness we are requesting. Rarely do I run across a single word that only creates 4 pages during a Google search.

What is "Jomeny" in Western terms?

First, the correct spelling is "Jominy". The Jominy end quench test is a measure of hardenability of a material. Here's a link that may help you understand it:

The test is standardized under ASTM Standard A255.

What material are you requesting, and what is being proposed? Are they similar steel classes?

I ran into a similar issue on gearing where 20MnCr5 was being proposed as a replacement for 8620H. Testing results were fine. However, the forge source could not guarantee that all heats would fall within and not below our desired Jominy band (the band that was tested), particularly at the J4 position.

As already stated, the Jominy is a hardenability test. In the past, Jominy tests have been physically performed just like a tensile test is. Now, there are Jominy curve calculators that are based on the chemistry of the material, and some companies allow this calculation to be used in substitution.
