What is the difference between Euler and Rankine? 1

What is the difference between the Rankine Gordon Formula and the Euler Formula. I'm working out the buckling loads for struts but the formula's give different results for the same strut problem. Why are the results different? Could somebody please help me out? Or if not are there any sites that could guide me on the right path?

Euler buckling is a theoretical (upper bound) capacity for concentrically-loaded, pin-ended columns. Real columns cannot achieve the Euler capacity due to eccentric loadings, end restraint conditions, initial crookedness, etc. Empirical formulas are often used to account for these effects.
