Does anyone have insight on this? Which one costs more?

Typically, the hand auger boring will not return soil samples that allow observation of the soil fabric. You get scrapings and can classify these, but it's hard to see relic texture or such. Also, hand auger borings don't allow for SPT or Shelby tube sampling. So, you are limited to using a DCP to guess the N-valule and have no real option to gather an undisturbed sample.

Hand auger borings don't have any where near the access problems.

Hand auger borings are great for mapping near-surface deposits of topsoil, swamp soils and such.

Hand auger borings are terrible in many fill soils (i.e., it doesn't take much of an obstical to obstruct progress).
