(7) Undercut
(A) For material less than] in. (25 mm) thick, undercut shall not exceed 1/32 in. (1 mm), except that a maximum 1/16 in. (2 mm) is permitted for an accumulated length of 2 in. (50 mm) in any 12 in. (300 mm). For material equal to or greater than 1 in. thick, undercut shall not exceed 1/16 in. (2 mm) for any length of weld.
It was explained to me that if you take a 12 in. weld and cut it into 3 (4 in. sections) that it is acceptable to have up to a 1/2 in. of undercut over a 1/32 in. but not greater than 1/16 in.
