First and foremost, I am not selling this or anything. I just want to know what this is. I posted the below 2 paragraphs in another forum of smart people and athey had slightly differing opinions. So I am going straight to the group of people that I hope can answer my question. I appreciate and thank you in advance for your time and patience with me.
BTW, it says I am in the military but only because there were no options for "other". So this was the closest to my current occupation.
The below link was the forum just for continuity sake.

I asked my father in law, who is the smartest and wisest person I know, didn't know. My mother who lived with the man who owned it doesn't know. I don't know. So I figure you guys will.
My step dad was a professional photog so it might have something to do with that. However, it looks like a surveying device of some sort. You look through the peephole and out the square glass end like a kaleidoscope. The lines on the glass appear to be elevation lines. There is a leveling bubble house on the outside of the box but it is also visible whenn you look through the peep hole. There is a "U.S." stamped on the outside of the box and my step dad was in the army back in the 50's. I figure that if it was Army gear it would say "Army" or something. It is exactly one inch square and 5 inches in length.
