They appear to be for water, flowing thru a therapeutic system which provides a 'cold pack', like an ice pack, but something that lasts much longer.

I have only seen couplings line then ones shone in medical equipment. I agree with the likely proprietary idea. Likely there is a patent that makes duplicating them risky.
 
John, I recently installed one of those at my daughter's place. They had the hot and cold keyed differently so that you could keep them straight. They were the same diameter so they would slide together, but it would only lock with the correct one.
