What kind of gear do I need for a battery driven wooden toy car? (roughly 1:32 scale)

My friends and I made a wooden toy car for a project. For now it's hand driven, but we want to add a battery and DC motor in order to drive it with a button.

We're not sure what material or size of gear we should choose for the "link" between the DC motor and the axle that rotates the car. We're not sure of the proper terms to search either, as we don't have any mechanical engineering knowledge. All we know is, the distance between two adjacent tips of teeth of the gear should be ~0.5cm. This is called the pitch of the gear apparently?

How should we figure out what gear to use/buy?

Would greatly appreciate any help or pointers. Thanks!

Well first you need to know, calculate or guesstimate speed of the two axles, torque and power of the system. Then how much space you have for the gears.

"Wooden toy" can be anything from about 2 inches long to 3 feet or more.. Is it intended to have people in it? Or kids?

You can probably use a plastic gear for a relatively small car.
