Per PMI machine, the material is classify as a M3 with the following composition:

Mo~6.35%
Nb 0.5%
Zr 0.7%
W 5.65%
Fe 80.32%
Cr 3.93%
V 1.79%

What material is this?

Recommended for you

M3 is a Molybdenum-bearing, high speed tool steel. This was apparently the closest match in your PMI catalog of steels - for Cr, Mo and V. Actually, your steel is probably closer to a Type M2 high speed steel, because the V by mass content is closer to 1.8%.




Was the surface adequately prepped for a PMI?
