please someone tell me what preserve shape does exactly to the model when click it in features like swept, ruled , through curves, etc

because before clicking preserve shape for one of my model created using swept i was not able to give a edge blend but then edited the parameters and clicked preserve shape, voila! im able to give edge blends!!

Lets say that your profile was a set of curves, lines and arcs, and if you did NOT choose the 'Preserve Shape' option, when you extrude the profile the resulting face will most likely be a single patch. Now this might be desirable under certain conditions but the resulting edges will be continuous 'curves' which might be more difficult to blend or perform other operations on. Now if the 'Preserve Shape' option was toggled 'ON' then there would a face created for each explicit curve in the profile, but what this also means is that the edges of the body will still be 'lines' and 'arcs', making them easier to perform certain operations on.
