We receive tons of Shop drawings and Contractor Submittals.

We currently use an Excel Spreadsheet to log and track it all.

I was wondering is there a better way?!

Take a look at some project management software that contractors use, e.g.

-Primavera Expedition (now known as contract manager)
-Prolog (by meridian)
-Constructware (by Autodesk)

There are lots but those are the main ones. They may be a bit pricey compared to Excel but that have modules that a specifically set up to track submittals.

We looked at software packages around but decided to create our own, where we receive 98% of our drawings in electronic format we then stamp them via our software and then merge them into a database for cross reference, since we introduced this we reduced our lead time and all documents are now available to all users via a web interface. To reduce our costs on this we used MySQL and then updated to MaxDB which is free and extremely powerful.

cheers
