What Standards Cover Material Groups 1018/1020 and 4130/4140 2

Good Day Everyone,

If this question has already been answered then please direct me to the appropriate thread.

I have recently been tasked with reviewing the material grades currently used for our product designs to make sure they have the needed mechanical properties. To accomplish this I have been cross referencing the mechanical properties in the appropriate ASTM Standards to our design calculations.

I am down to my last two groups of materials and I am having trouble locating what ASTM standards cover the mechanical properties of:

1) 1018 / 1020

2) 4130 / 4140

in both flat and round bars.

If ASTM standards do not clearly cover these materials what SAE standards do.

They are SAE/AISI standard material grades. 4130/4140 are heat treatable grades that can meet a multitude of strength requirements.
Strength of 1018/1020 varies with hot rolled, cold finished or cold drawn/rolled condition.
 
SAE J403 covers chemical composition for 1018/1020. SAE J404 covers chemical composition for 4130/4140. ASTM A29 covers the chemical composition for both. If you want mechanical properties, try one of these:

Hot-Rolled Alloy Steel Bars:

Design for RELIABILITY, manufacturability, and maintainability
 
You really want to get to the product you are trying to analyze. I would look in the Worldwide Guide to Equivalent Irons and Steels by ASM first - it will list both product forms and equivalent alloys. Another good source is the listing of UNS alloys from ASTM/SAE - your alloys are UNS G10180 (1018), G10200 (1020), G41300 (4130), and G41400 (4140). This is usually a subset of what you will find in the Worldwide Guide, but it is useful especially if you do not have the first reference.
