What to do with a point cloud...

Aside from the Reverse Engineering Add-on for ProE, is there another software package that could help me out?

I have a point cloud that I need to create solid geometry from. It is a compound curvature surface which will undoubtedly need to be smoothed and manipulated.

Hi,

I am new to the point cloud data from white light scans. I was given a link to Polyworks Viewer 3D. I think there is a free version that can be used for visualizing the point cloud.

I would be curious to know how others are using this data. For us, we are using the data to check the shape of a die cast part. I am used to the traditional first article report with a measurement result for each dimension on the drawing. The measurements would be taken using a CMM.

With a point cloud, it is appears time-consuming to translate the results as compared to print dimensions. I am assuming that it may be better to add points to the 3D model of the part being inspected, best-fitting the cloud points taken via scanning by aligning the datums, and then checking the delta between the 3D model's points and the same locations within the cloud.

Any comments would be received with much interest.
