Hi,

what are some things to look for when inspecting a newly manufactured pressure vessels. Any inputs that can constitute bullet points in a checklist will be helpful.
E.g. internally coated, welds free from undercutting, no arc strikes on metal surfaces, etc.

thanks for your help.

Recommended for you

Nameplate including required information (varies based jurisdiction and site requirements)
Material traceability certificates
Welders qualifications
Detailed design calculations and evidence of independent checking (if required)
NDT results
Nozzles and openings installed as per drawings
Hydrotest results
Vessel certification (unless you're doing that yourself)
Clear marking of any temporary internal bracing or external lifting lugs to be used for erection

As a chem eng/metallurgist the first part of any answer I give starts with "It Depends"

Dimensional aspects; does the vessel conform to GA drawing?
Visual examination; can you approve the weldments? Are the welds acc. WPS?
Is the dwg acc. calculation, and is the calc. acc. parts list? Or in any other order, as longs as those 3 are the same.
Etc.

Squareness and projection of nozzles, especially squareness.
Location [distance from tangent line] and rotation [angularity from 0° line] of nozzles
Low-point drain has been radiused on the ID such that it is free-draining and cannot trap liquid
If vessel has a skirt, the Two-Hole of the baseplate flange bolt holes [ common mistake ]
Is gasket on manway/hand-hole [and any other flanges that will be left in place when installing this vessel] acceptable for the vessel process, or does it need replaced prior to use.

The items itdepends has mentioned are in the purview of the AI - Authorized Inspector - and have been checked. Never hurts to double-check. As long as nozzles are properly welded and hold hydro pressure, they are not something that the AI checks. Same with Two-Hole of any flange.

1) See the contract
2) If ASME VIII Div. 1, see UG-90
