Please advise what type of weld this is.

Solution
It is intended to provide complete fusion through the section and to add additional weld section to increase strength without the difficulty that a full penetration bevel weld requires. A full penetration bevel risks blowing through the material in some irregular way while risking leaving a crack where the two pieces of metal meet that might trap moisture and start corrosion.

Thanks weldstan, is groove weld same as bevel butt weld?
Why then is fillet weld added?
 
I expect a picture of the weld joint would answer that question.
 
This is the exact same weld (but with ISO notation)

Solution
I've updated my schematic as it seems there is still confusion. There is no obligation to execute this as a full pen weld. Both options are possible. That's the reason why (under ISO at least) it is necessary to add the dimensions for each weld.

Thanks kingnero, that's a good point, I was assuming bevel/groove weld was equivalent to a butt weld, and the fillet weld size dependent on thickness of plate (as called up on standard drawing). So I guess your saying combination of both may have less capacity than a butt weld.
 
AFIAIK unless a size is given, the bevel weld shall be full penetration. There isn't a requirement on the size of the fillet, but this will ensure there isn't a problem on the far side of the bevel.

Thats my understanding as well, at least from an ISO 2553 perspective.
 
That is correct under ISO 2553, unless the dimensioning next to the weld symbol (that is mandatory, not optional!) tells you otherwise.

This discussion is helpful in making my courses better / more clear!
