what use is FEM to butterfly valves? 1

Hi chaps,

I would like to know to what extend FEM is used for butterfly valves design?

What i heard from one manufacturer is that tey did mostly handcalcs for structural and only used FEM to determine deformations? Can someone explain this to me in greater depth?
