In response to an issue, a utility referred to "NFPA Handbook, Revision 14" and then Standards NFPA-13 and NFPA-15. I've gone into my IHS subscription, and, as far as I can tell, the standards use an edition year rather than an revision number. I've also looked on the NFPA website and, again, it appears they use edition years rather than revision numbers.

I'm trying to determine what year "Revision 14" applies to. It actually would be a good thing if the "Revision" terminology was outdated because the concern dates from actions taken in 1980 and 1981. However, I'd like to confirm rather than assume...

Thanks

Which Handbook?

NFPA uses year editions for revision for many but not all standards. Years apply to NFPA 1, NFPA 13, NFPA 15. The National Electrical Code NFPA 70 and the Handbook 70H. However, my copy of the National Fire Alarm Code Handbook is the Fourth Edition with the complete text of the 2002 edition of NFPA 72, copyright 2002. The Firepump Handbook is the first edition.

maybe talking about this:::

nfpa 13 covers fire sprinkler installation

nfpa 15 covers Standard for Water Spray Fixed Systems for Fire Protection.

nfpa 14 covers standpipe installation

than depending on the ahj as to waht year edition they have adopted, and also the private designers also design to certain year, which is normaly the most current

Thank you both for your responses, especially given the limited information I have to provide you.

I believe that the "Fire Prevention Handbook" (or NFPA-1) is the most likely document (it is definitely a fire protection issue (spray versus sprinkler) rather than electric code or fire pump.

Based on the link cdafd provided (and looking at the fine print, which I failed to do yesterday) I noticed that the 2008 version is the 20th edition. Doing some more digging on the NFPA site, I found that the first edition of the Fire Prevention Handbook (or NFPA 1) was issued in 1997. Since I was trying to determine if the 14th edition was around in 1980 when the system was designed, I believe my question's been answered.

Little purple stars to you both!

Is your question a fire sprinkler question???

nfpa 1 was not in print in 1980, maybe started in 2000??

nfpa 13 fore fire sprinklers has been around for ever

so what is your real question??? what is the utility person telling you to do or not do

Dear Patricia Hello,

Hope query gets better replied by NFPA forum giants;

I understand nowadays NFPA issues some handbooks in parallel to the codes.It might be 14th revision of a 'Handbook'that needs clarification.

Dear Patricia

NFPA Fire Protection Handbooks are guides, general fire safety data and engineering information. They are designed to be an information resource and are not codes or standards. The latest handbook is the 20th edition which was published in 2008. Fire Protection Handbook editions are published every three years, just like the codes.

NFPA 1 is the Uniform Fire Code which was developed by the Western Fire Chiefs starting in 1961. Between 2000 and 2003 the Western Fire Chiefs agreed to have NFPA publish the Uniform Fire Code and in 2003 it was first published by NFPA as NFPA 1. The latest edition of NFPA-1 is the 2009 Edition.

NFPA-13, Standard for the design and installation of fire sprinkler systems was first published in 1889. The newest edition is the 2007.

As to the reference to the NFPA Handbook is concerned, that would have been used for general information purposes only because the handbook is just that, a "handbook", it is not a code. The applicable code at the time would depend on what the state, city, county in the location had adopted.

If you need more info on codes, please give me a call at The McMullen Company, Inc. in Davis CA.

vpl,
The 14th edition of the NFPA Handbook was published in 1976, and all references to NFPA Standards were as of the latest edition of that standard.
Hope this helps.

FYI

A good rule of thumb is that if the NFPA document has a number, like NFPA-13 Fire Sprinkler Installation, NFPA-268 Exterior wall ignitability, NFPA-70 National Electric Code, NFPA-5000 Building Code, then it is a code or standard. If it does not, then it is a reference document.

Codes and Standards are developed through the consensus process while referance documents like the Fire Protection Handbook are typically developed by one, two or three people. And by the way, you will never find any codes or standards on the internet. Both NFPA and ICC are in the business of developing codes and standards but they are also in the business of making money.

While the Fire Protection Handbook contains no codes, other handbooks, like the Fire Sprinkler Handbook is a comentary on NFPA-13 and contains the full text of that standard. The edition year depends upon when the handbook is published.

Hope this helps.

BJ
