I have a need to come up with a naming convention for drawing descriptions. Does anyone know of any standards that offer guide lines as to construct a proper character string for components such as electical, hardware, sheet metal plastic parts. etc..?

ASME Y14.100

(section 5 in 2004 edition, non mandatory Appendix C gives even more)

Use ASME Y14.38 for standard abbreviations if necessary.

Kenat, thanks for the information. I will check out these standards. Im sure they will help!

Just realize ASME Y14.100 doesn't go into great levels of detail, and doesn't show hundreds of examples.

However, it lays out basic principles and by using it with the terms in 14.38 as required it builds a reasonable guide.
