What's the difference (Download - Link)

Hi and thanks for all responses.
In Windchill when adding objects to a workspace, what's the difference between "Download" and "Link". I think I understand the basic difference (but please include your comments) but my question has more to do with "is one prefered or more efficient than the other?".
