When a safety watcher is required - electrical work

In Canada, federal regulations are calling for electrical safety watcher when an employee is working on or near electrical equipment.

In tipical industrial facility (600V and less) what would be the criteria for asigning the safety watcher?
- voltage level
- ampacity of the circuit

Any reference to industry standards regarding safety watchers would be apreciated.

Check OSHA and/or your insurance carrier. Canada also has an "OSHA" - just not sure what they call it.

There is a new CSA Z462 standard that I believe follows NFPA 70E pretty closely.

This should cover requirements for work around energized equipment.

IIRC, NFPA 70E does not explicitly require this.

Unfortunately CSA Z462 which indeed follows NFPA 70E does not make reference to specific cases when safety watcher (attendant) is required.

The only requirements for that I have ever found is for >600V in OSHA 1910.269
