[In saudia ARAMCO pressure vessel specification following is a requirement regarding when to use DIV 2:

6.1.3 ASME SEC VIII D2 shall be specified when economically justified.
The following guidelines shall be used to determine when D2 should
be considered:
1) When the design thickness of the vessel shell or heads exceeds
50 mm, irrespective of design pressure, materials, or service.
2) When the erected weight of the vessel, (excluding removable
internal and external attachments) exceeds 90 Tonnes (100 Tons).
3) For vessels with design pressures 6.9 MPa (1,000 psi) and
greater, irrespective of service and materials of construction.

Question: Is it mandatory to use Div 2 when any of the above condition is present, or we can have any of the above condition but still if the thickness difference between div 1 and div 2 is not that much we can use div.1. EXAMPLE : if an equipment has 9.8 Mpa pressure, and thickness from div 1 is 34 mm and thickness from div 1 is 31 mm, so can i use div because in this case cost due to 3 mm more thickness is minimum cared to cost associated with RPE and other requirement associated with DIV 2.

question: Can i use simple pad type nozzle in div-2[/b]

This is a question(s) that must be asked of this particular owner.

As the vessel fabricator you are probably the one who is more experienced at assessing if Div 2 is "economically justified". Aramco probably don't have a clue.

The Aramco specification uses the words "guidelines" and "consider". I don't associate these words with a mandatory requirement.

nammanj123, you should read your contract closely. It should most likely specify if the Buyer wants a Div 2 vessel or not.

The quoted language in 6.1.3 is, in my experience, intended for the Buyers' engineers, etc. It is almost never up to the fabricator to decide between the Divisions.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand
