Good morning gents and ladies. I've recently been designing (or re-designing) a number of S&T heat exchangers to replace existing units in kind (as best is possible while adhering to the code).

I've noticed that body flanges are calculating MUCH thicker (I estimate from memory 40-60% thicker) than the ones on the units that are being replaced. I was wondering when Appendix 2 became mandatory. Can anyone tell me?

No idea on when App 2 came into existence.

But recently the flange rigidity check from Appendix S was moved into Appendix 2 as a mandatory check. The flange rigidity check (2-14) can govern the thickness in some cases. The paragraph also allows for successful previous experience to be used as an alternate to the 2-14 rules for nonlethal fluids, etc.

You may want to investigate to see what condition is governing the thickness of the flanges, stress or rigidity.

thanks, tom. always helpful.

i guess last time i read 2-14, i skimmed past the 'previous experience' clause. thanks for pointing that out!

Just to help you determine when Appendix 2 came into existence, I have a copy of the 1962 Section VIII, and it has mandatory Appendices 1 through 7 (although at that time, they were I through VII).
