i am looking for a standalone worm and rack mechanism for clamping.
I found such a thing....called Cone-Lok in an old Jergens catalogue. Basically it is a worm gear and cylindrical rack in a cartridge ready to mount. PERFECT!! except now i can't find them online anywhere.
A similar item is the rack used in drill presses or arbour presses, but, i don't want all the cast iron, just the guts. And before you tell me i could machine a housing etc. I am trying to find an off the shelf unit first that will be far cheaper.
Any help you can provide is certainly appreciated.
thanx!!

If you are looking for rack and pinion gears the following link is one supplier. I have never used them but did receive good catalogs from them. I sure there are many others out there.

You can buy racks and gears from any gear supplier. You will probably not find an economical "off-the-shelf" housing for an assembly. Go to a junk yard and buy an old rack and pinion steering unit if you need to be "cost effective".

we make Aluminum racks and pinions to be used on the bottom gates of grain and fertillizer bins
