Hi All,

This is a rather interesting question and I am hoping someone will have some innovative answers.

I live in the UK and work as a Professional Consultant Engineer and want to expand my business. To this effect I want to service more clients by looking into doing more work, from home at first if necessary.

I have already written to my local EDS Sales Support here in the UK. Not being one to waste time I thought I would put the question up for debate/comment etc. I am also looking for alternatives in case they say they are unable to assist me, being a singular enterprise as it were.

If anyone has any ideas that maybe of assistance I would very much welcome the comments. I know in other countries that have companies that rent you licences by the hour. If there were anything similar I would be very interested to hear of it.

I look forward to your responses.

Best Regards

Dave

Hi Dave
We have a licenced dongle which we can transfer from one machine to another.
The reason we did it this way is so we can have UG loaded on a desktop at work and on our laptop.
That way we can plug the dongle into the laptop for taking to a client or for working at home.

The licence recognises the dongle not the machine.

Your clients could setup their license server, so it can be accessed via the internet. Some IT people may frown on an open port to the internet, so they may prefer doing it via vpn.

Thats how I access the license server, so I can work from home.

Everything should be designed as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Hi Kadego & Gunman,

Thanks very much for your interesting and thoughtful ideas, they would certainly be possible solutions.

However I have been doing more research recently and what I have found is this. There are licences that can be rented/bought on a weekly/monthly/yearly basis as needs require.

I have only found one company offering this service at present, does anyone know of any other companies offering this service.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am also investigating the VPN options in case a client could provide a license. However I would like to have the facility available to me to get a license quickly, should a prospective client not have one and need my services.

I think if I have this flexibility it would certainly give me a distinct advantage.

Best Regards

Dave,
I have a Single User Seat on a laptop using a dongle like the other guys. Being standalone is proving to be an advantage as alot of my clients are now refusing to allow Subcon to connect to their networks. Also I have found that if you have your own license you can charge a premium!
I think I paid Euro16k for 1 seat of Adv Designer here in Ireland.

Hi PaddyRam,

Thanks very much for the info it is just what I was hoping someone would tell me. I have a feeling knowing how Unigraphics operate I could not buy my license in Ireland that cheap. I suspect they will have a clause in the EULA state that it is not transferable from country to country. I had this experience working in Australia some years ago.

If it is not too much trouble, could you give me a bit more info about how your individual license works. You mentioned that you have 1 seat of Adv Designer. Is the essentially a hybrid type bundle comprising of the say; gateway, solids, freeform, drafting, sheetmetal, translators (STEP & IGES) and I noticed possible in your case Electrical?. For EURO16K I certainly hope you get this much at least if not a bit more.

So where is the catch, I always feel with them there is one? Once you have your seat, which I imagine you 'technically' don't own but according to the wording of the EULA you are licensed to use, for how long can you continue to use it? If you do not pay maintainence do you get the next upgrade or not? Do you then have to pay a huge annual 'mantainence fee? I know from the past it was equal to 8-10% of the initail license fee per year. Does this allow you to keep using the seat even if you don't pay for the maintainence? Or are they tricky and build that cost into the license contract?

Your further assistance and advice would be of great help.

ps I have given you a Post star because your answer was exactly what I needed to know, Thanks once again.

Best Regards

Dave

UG licensing does not require you to pay maintenance, however you don't get tech support or upgrades.

We have frozen our UG to V18 and have not paid maintenance for 2 years. It still runs, but I can not upgrade beyond NX1, since I received that version before we quit paying maintenance.

"Fixed in the next release" should replace "Product First" as the PTC slogan.
