Hi!
I'm thinking about buying a guidebook for ASME VIII div 1 and I'm choosing between the following two:

Guidebook for the Design of ASME Section VIII, Pressure Vessels by James R. Farr & Maan H. Jawad

CASTI Guidebook to ASME Section VIII Div.1 - Pressure Vessels by Bruce Ball & Will Carter

The Casti-book is twice as expensive as the other but is it also twice as good? Which one should I choose?
Any ideas out there?

Thanks
Pontus

A previous post indicated the CASTI Guidebook is a must for pressure vessel design in dealing with materials. Remember, you get what you pay for.

You can download a light version of the CASTI book for free at

This will give you an introduction although this version will obviously not contain the most valuable information from the purchased one.

This is also possible with some of the other Casti Books - try main page at

I already looked at the lite-version and it looks great, but there is no lite-version of the book by Farr & Jawad, so its hard to compare them.

But I think I have finally decided to go with casti.
It's not like I'm paying for it with my own salary:)

Thank you both

You can also save quite a bit if buy used from an Amazon seller. I've save about 60% of the cost of a new CASTI book, and it is like brand new.

James R. Farr & Maan H. Jawad are both on Code Committee and their book contains excellent information covering all aspects of ASME Section VIII.
