Which nut for which bolt?

If you have for example a M24 bolt, which nut type will you have to use for this bolt? Would you just say one has to use M24 type nut for a M24 type bolt? Do you classify nuts same way you do bolt sizes - M24, M26 etc?

You would refer to the specification for the bolts you are using. e.g BS 3692, ISO 898 etc

This table is taken from BS 3692 to give you an idea.

You need to specify the bolt grade, not just its thread diameter. You should also specify the pitch, as a fine series is allowed even in metric. Apparently these days the rule of thumb is that the nut should be 0-1 strength grade higher than the bolt, which is a change of practice from when I was young.
