hi! Folks
this is my issue here. i am an electrical engineer from Argentina and i have several years of experience in power engineering specially in power machines (synchronous and induction motors and generators) and i found that Siemens, GE or Alstom in USA are not sponsoring for green card. The GE case is more significantly because they have an hispanic community and they say that they invoke the pluralism in the workplace or as the other ones they say they are 'Equal Opportunity Employers'
Could you tell me if this is what is happening in reality or i am searching in the wrong way? or you have other ways to look for american companies that sponsor green card

Please tell me any suggestion, they will be all welcomed

Thanx

Juan

Most of the companies in that industry are cutting back here in the US because the majority of large power projects are taking place in other countries, not here. So they likely have no need of people, green cards or otherwise.

Based on my experience, US companies will sponsor and get you a green card after they decided to hire you. I was approached by recruiting people and in the final negotiation stage it was confirmed that their legal dept would take care of the paper work required for non US citizen to be able to work in the US.

By the way, try Rockwell Automation, we are almost always looking for experienced Power Engineers in our Services group.

From the inside view, most of the companies you listed are international companies, so they don't have to hire in the US, when they can hire in there offices in other countries.
The companies that are most likely to hire in the US are companies that need people with a physical location in the US. Like the local utilities.

It's a pain for us to, because you call these companies and they want to sell equipment made for 50 Hz. Or try to convence your boss you need to do a factory visit in (Insert several international locations). Also there are differences in standards between the ANSI and IEC, so it become hard to compare products. As well as the language differences (Even from here to England).

Let's not ignore one other key factor, which are the stupid political agendas at work in the USA. I have a good friend, who is a brilliant power systems engineer, that had to go through an 8 year H1B nightmare - a Canadian / Polish citizen. After dealing with with legal support of a large OEM and several personal attorneys, it was only because his wife is an RN that his process was streamlined. Within about 2 years of that he got his green card.

BTW @ jref - are you based in cream city, under the light of the polish moon?

< it was only because his wife is an RN that his process was streamlined >

That's how I got my green card. My ex is an RN so she didn't have to go through the labor certification process and I got my green card as the dependent spouse. My company (I was on a TN visa) was very interested in sponsoring me through the green card process plus it was just easier have my ex being the primary green card applicant.

Don't worry cranky, we don't make any big electrical equipment here any more so a factory visit in England ain't likely. Reyrolle, Parsons, GEC, English Electric, BTH, Ferranti, Metro-Vick all gone... [sad]

Hate to be cruel - but we already have enough people out of work here!! -- Why import??

Scotty, I guess we should be glad our goverment (or the unions for that matter) hasen't stamped out all our large manufacturing yet.
There are only a few differences in our languages, but it is just enough to disrupt the flow of reading a well written instruction manual or power system book. I don't know why "earthing" just dosen't flow as well as "grounding" to me.

As far as factory tours, there are locations in the US that would not look good to the State Public Utilities Commission (can you say sin city). Some how it seems we can only visit factorys in places you would not want to take a vacation in.

Maybe there needs to be consultants that only do factory tours, and send in reports. Which I have hired a consultant to do just that, because I did not want to travel to Des Moines, for three days to do a one hour inspection.

So there is a job, just do factory visits for international cliants.

Had lunch today with one of the managers that would be involved in hiring field engineers in Northern California and asked him about whether or not we sponsor people for green cards. He said we do, but only after giving up on finding someone here in the US for a job because it is an extreme expense to do the green card paperwork and it gets charged to his business expenses for the DISTRICT, not the entire company. So he doesn't do it, he can't afford it unless he can "steal" someone from another company (or district) that already bore the brunt of the expense. Right now he is looking for a Power Engineer for a multi-year embededed project in Petrochem, can't find anyone interested. All the people that apply want to work for maybe 6 months at the refinery then move on to something more interesting, when they hear it's 3-4 years, they decline the job.

Go figure...
