why chemical dosing tanks are horizontal 1

In one of our brownfield EPC projects, there was a space limitation. We requested the client to agree to a vertically placed dosing tank. We were ready to bear the cost of increased dosing shelter height.

But,the client said that as per good engineering practice, the tanks must be horizontal. As a consequence, we had to negotiate and pay for the additional land from adjacent chemical industry to install the dosing tanks.

Can someone please help me by explaining the reasons why chemical dosing tanks are preferred to be horizontal?

Sounds a bit odd to me. I can only think that it makes draining the tanks or being able to use the last drop before you need to refill it easier and you can place the nozzles on the bottom of the vessel.

Other than that and easier access for cleaning and maintenance of any instruments on the top of the tank.

Long term makes more sense and maybe that's where the operator is coming from.

The size of the tankl shall be around 2.5 m dia x 4 meter length. This project was in middle east.

Based on the client response, we consulted a few skid suppliers in the middle east. But, they also said that they generally supply horinontal oriented dosing tanks. These suppliers are mostly sales orineted agents of the manufacturers in europe and usa and they are not so technically knowledgeable.

Ultimately, the client is not only highly reputed in the middle east but also has many epc projects in the pipeline. Hence, our management thought it prudent to go ahead with the client's opinion.

Out of curiosity, i want to know whether there is any reason for having the dosing tanks in horizontal orientation.

Forum members opinion is requested please.
 
The only reason I can think of is that the tank will be shipped horizontally, so more of the tank and attachments can be prefabricated if it is designed as a horizontal tank.
 
In general horizontal tanks are easier to build and install as they can use simple saddles, easy foundations and don't have as much wind loading.

That is along way from they MUST be horizontal, just most are, hence its easy to make the jump from one to the other.

Most of the dosing tanks are vertical.

The most economical tanks are generally with the height being 2-4 times the width.
