We have an acs800 drive. We also have a hand/off/auto switch. My question is how do we wire this HOA switch into the drive to give a manual start when we also have an auto start going into the drive?

Thanks

Generally you wire the same signal polarity and magnitude via the HOA so the automatic signal is passed thru the switch to the drive's Forward or Run terminal. Then duplicating whatever that signal is you provide it to the "other" terminal of the HOA.

If you are sending 12Vdc to the drive from the automatic control tie a fixed 12Vdc to the other terminal of the HOA so that is sent via the HOA if set to Hand. Likewise 24Vdc if that's what the automatic controller is sending.

So, the HOA's common terminal is going to the drive and one of the other terminals goes to the automatic controller and the last goes to a fixed voltage. One position hooks the automatic signal to the drive, a second position interrupts the all signals to the drive, and the third position sends the fixed voltage to the drive.

Sorry. If you need to ask such a basic question, then I'm afraid that a simple answer doesn't help.
There are quite a few options and you haven't given us any facts.
Study the manual or get someone do it for you. It is a little more complicated than a three-way switch for a lamp.

Your biggest decison with whether to keep the HOA selection within the drive or external. If external it is almost trivial, if internal then you need a couple of binary inputs and a little bit of configurable logic.

You may want to consider how the speed will be controlled in the manual position.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I was being very clear.

When we turn the switch to hand. Do we wire the start push button in series with the hand contact?

Thanks

Hi LC85, Are you sure you want to monkey around with that?? The "Hand" switch is a closed position and a "Start" button is normally a momentary switch. If you connect these in series you will only have a signal as long as your holding the Start button.

This is something that will be specific to the programming of that drive. I have a copy of the programming manual, but not on this PC. However I highly suggest that you invest in one if you own this drive, it is virtually impossible to program it without the manual. The ACS800 is a highly complex piece of equipment, not a "starter kit" for VFDs.

Without knowing for sure, the GENERAL methodology in drives programming is that you program one of the digital inputs for Start/Run (assuming 2 wire control), hard wired to the Hand position of your HOA switch as the Local command. Then program another input as "Local-Remote", hard wired to the Auto position of your HOA switch. Then, as an example depending on how THAT drive says it reacts, when the L-R input is low (off), the drive does nothing unless the Start/Run command goes high. When the L-R input is high, the drive is on Remote Control and accepts whatever is supposed to control it automatically, such as the communications port from a PLC, and also ignores the Start/Run input terminal status. If your remote control is via digital inputs as well, then you have to set up another input as the PLC Start/Run command. But again, all of this is very very specific to how THAT drive functions.

If you would like me to RTFM and program it for you, please forward $100,000 US to my PayPal account immediately, that will cover my time and whatever travel costs it will take to get me to your drive, wherever you are. There are others here who would likely do it for less, but they are not me...

You sound like me now, Jeff.
I could contemplate a somewhat lower fee, though.

That's because you want to do it. I'd have to use up some of my vacation time, then hope my employer doesn't find out, so it needs to be worth it for me.

Lc85,
Hire Skogsgurra, he's better than me anyway and you can probably get him for less.

No, Jeff.

I DO NOT WANT THAT KIND OF JOBS

That is something that any sparky that can read a manual can do.

Thanks, Scotty. But, well... not THAT impossible...
