A couple of the guys here in the office have started encountering a problem, very regularly (70-80% of the time)

Running Mathcad 8

They are set up with standard templates, which they open and save as a new file, then modify. Recently, Mathcad has stopped letting them do this. Have to start the program, try to saveas, shut it down, do it again, sometimes 3 or 4 times, if it lets them do it at all. What it does (at least on one machine) is when they pick save as, rename, and hit enter, gives a "sharing violation" but when they do exactly the same thing again, it works. Never had this problem before, and it doesn't happen all the time. Any ideas? I don't use the program personally, so I have no clues.

Thanks

Usually, that's a conflict between Windows and Mathcad and very likely, some new software was installed that mangled the registry entries for Mathcad.

There are also some known conflicts with some virus programs.

Not sure if Mathcad 8 has Regtool.exe, which should be in top directory along with Mathcad.exe. It's a tool for re-registering all your DLL's and has fixed many problems in the past.

We've had the same problems. We've actually lost days of work because of MathCAD's buggy save/save as feature.

What we've seen is that MathCAD will sometimes refuse to saveas or worse yet, it will pretend to successfully saveas, then the next day when you open up your file, you'll find that it didn't save at all. The problems seem to occur only when saving across the network, and we haven't seen this problem when saving on a local drive.

MathSoft claims it is an incompatibility between our Novell Netware and MathCAD, MathSoft doesn't support Novell and so we haven't really gotten any help from them.

But the work around is don't use saveas. If you need to rename a file, copy it and rename it from the windows desktop.

Also be very, very careful with any form of saving with MathCAD. It's extremely buggy, so make sure you do a nightly backup. Also, if MathCAD gives you a message about an internal error, and then asks you to save before it shuts down, you may irreparabley corrupt your file. The workaround here is, as soon as you see the internal error, go to windows, and copy the file you're working on. Then go back to MathCAD and save when it prompts you to. If you're lucky, MathCAD will save your changes since your last save before crashing. If your unlucky, you'll have a corrupted file, but you can rely on your backup.
