I'm designing a collector strut that transfers the lateral load from a diaphragm into a shear wall and wanted to make sure of the capacity of the nailed connection. I attached a quick calc and sketch of the connection. Basically there is a 2x collector strut with 10d common nails connecting to the sheathing and a block that is behind the sheathing. For this connection would I need to reduce the value of the connection by the minimum penetration factor of penetration/10D at shear plane 1 in the sketch? Or because there is a block behind the sheathing that receives the nail, there are 2 shear planes so would it be more appropriate to use 2* the connection capacity (2*37# = 74#), and then ignore the minimum penetration reduction factor? Thanks!
