Doing some searching here and reading over the years I found a lot of you use a core sampler called an "increment borer". I am interested in finally getting something to take wood samples with. I have located suppliers for these but I am looking for some feedback. These look like they are designed for tree samples so they have this big handle which needs some clearance. Since what I am looking for is to use it in the confines of a crawlspace or attic or between 16" o/c joists and there is a floor deck above and I need to sample small lumber at times I am wondering some things:

1) if this is in fact the best tool or if there is something else out there? Small like a wine cork screw size?
2) Any experiences or pros and cons to this type of tool? Troubles? ease of use?
3) Bit size recommendations?

Would it be practical to use a deep hole saw of the appropriate diameter together with an angle head drill, or would the saw tend to rip up the fibers too badly for a good analysis? I believe increment borers have a knife edge (no teeth) to protect the sample quality.

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

I suppose I want to preserve the structural integrity of the lumber too (if it still has any). I'm talking 0.12 - 0.2" diameter max in a 2x4.

I have one I've used for 20 years... works well and provides me with a sample about 1/8" dia. I don't have the borer with me, but it will take about a 12" or 16" deep sample. One of my earlier postings, I noted the supplier and location.

Thanks Dik. I believe your post is one of those I am referencing. I have the source. I am wondering if this is not too unwieldy in a joist space or otherwise. Maybe the pictures are misleading but the handles and the bits look big.
Not to be personal, but I am interested in the size of it.

Size is everything...

The borer 'collapsed' is 19" long by 3/4" dia. Assembled it is 18" long (auger part) x 18.5" (handle). You may be able to sample parts of conventional wood frame construction, but not all parts.
