If you have a one story house and you are turning it into a 2 story house, how do you typically detail the exterior wall transition? The existing exterior wall plywood stops at the top of existing double top plate. The existing rafters are removed, then new floor joists sit on top of the existing double top plate with 1 1/8 rim board. But then plywood will stop and start right above the double plate and the plywood only nails to the rim and not the existing framing. What is the best way to do this?

If the concern is horizontal shear transfer from the new floor to the lower one, I usually use Simpson angles, like L70s, to connect the rim board to the top plate, spacing the angles as needed to transfer the required force. I'm sure there are some other options as well.

If uplift is a concern, then use metal straps or holddown connectors between posts/wall studs.
