Hello,

In the CSA O86-14-Engineering Design in Wood section 9.5 Resistance of structural panels, there are 4 different shear checks. I am confused regarding what they mean and which one to check in which scenario?
I have read the “CSA-O86-14-Commentary”, “Plywood-Design-Fundamentals-Canadian-Plywood-Association” and the related parts of textbook “Design of wood structures-Donald Breyer(6th Ed)”.
Below are the sections for your convenience and for myself I have added snippets in red boxes of what I think all of these are referring to. (I believe it would be great if CSA could include something like this in the next update).
I don’t see the difference between “9.5.5.1. Shear due to bending of structural panel on edge” and “9.5.5.2 Shear-through-thickness in structural panel splice of gusset plate”. 2nd appears to be same as the 1st except in horizontal direction?

Well what is your actual application?

There are situations where all 4 could need to be checked simultaneously, but that would be rare. I'd anticipate in many cases you're checking only one of the 4 based on the your current application.
