We have been tasked with adding sprinkler coverage to a building with a historic wood waffle ceiling. We are not allowed to modify the ceiling per the State Historical Preservation Office. I believe this ceiling qualifies as having ceiling pockets per NFPA 13 8.6.7.1. They meet all the exceptions of NFPA 13 8.6.7.2 except with it being wood, it does not meet item (5) of being noncombustible or limited-combustible.

Am I interpreting this correctly that these pockets need coverage?

The AHJ has hinted they would consider a variance due to the historic nature but we need to detail how the space would be covered underneath, which is another challenge without creating an eyesore.
