Hi,
I am hoping to get some assistance on a work flow issue in Catia V5 Part Design.

I have two parts which have to be connected together with fasteners. One of the two parts is received from an external source and is in STEP format. The fastener holes in STEP part numerous and is not spaced out uniformly & many times are staggered. Lets call STEP format Part as 'A' & the other part created natively in Catia V5 as 'B'.

Now to create corresponding fastening holes in Part B, I was thinking of the following work flow:

1. Create a sketch on Part B (one of the surfaces) and project the fastener hole centres from Part A on to the sketch.

2. Create one Hole using the Hole Feature.

3. Pattern the above created hole feature using custom pattern command and sketch created from Step 1.

Unfortunately, I am stuck at Step 1. I am not able to figure out on how to project just the fastener hole centres from Part A on to the sketch on Part B. I can project hole perimeter/circumference using Project 3D command...but not the hole centres.

Any suggestions on how the above can be accomplished in Catia V5? I have to explore further, but is there an option in Sketch to create a centre point using existing circle?

Since the hole count is numerous, it would be tedious to create individual points and then have to constrain them. Just hoping for a work flow which would minimize the effort needed.

Thx

A way of creating holes in mating parts depends on company rules. You can create assembly and projects holes from part A to part B as well. Personally I use publications. In your case I would create vectors in part A, publish them, and paste as result with link into part B. As for the fasteners I create dummy product where only vectors, mating faces, and additional geometry needed for assembly are present. No solids or open bodies in a dummy product.

Hey Jenial,
Interesting approach. Would it be possible for you to elaborate projection techniques in Assembly? I will look up on using Publications as I am not familiar with them at all.

Also how would I create vectors in Part A? Does Catia V5 documentation contains references to Vectors? Would this be created in Assembly or Part module? Can I create/pattern holes using linked vectors in Part B?

The above are interesting suggestions. Thanks a lot for providing them. I hope you can provide answers to some of the above so that it will give me some more info to research more.
