I just graduated and I’m looking into what jobs I can work at while I take anxiety medicine ( Valium) once in a while. I always wanted to work at a refinery or chemical plant but I heard that this prescription drug may not be allowed since it can affect someone’s balance, coordination, etc. However, I never have those side effects. After all, engineers don't use machines, etc.

Will this be an issue? What are the US laws on this?

I do not believe that there are any State or National standards regarding specific drugs. Within certain limits, every company makes up their own rules on specific prescription drugs

I worked at several Nuclear Power Plants and I was required to submit a list of ALL prescription drugs that I was taking. All people at the plant were required to submit to both periodic and random urine testing for specific narcotics. They were aware that they had an aging workforce and old engineers and fitters occasionally require dental work and other procedures.

With a Doctor's letter, I don't think you will have a problem ...

I imagine that if you got a statement from your doctor regarding your dosage

Dear FlyingRago,

I will suggest you;

The problems that you can't deal with are not your problems.. forget about and avoid them.

Avicenna Quotes ' There are no incurable diseases — only the lack of will. There are no worthless herbs — only the lack of knowledge.'

Good Luck..

I've been in the chemical industry 41 years. It's a great career and you can enjoy it if you take your prescription meds responsibly.

For the randon drug tests, give them your prescription med and dosage list. As long as you take them responsibly, no worries! Don't abuse them though, because it's not if, but when, "da man" will catch you on the next randon test.

If you do something unwise/unsafe and/or get caught up in an incident triggered drug test, well, they'll start looking at you through the microscope until they know for a fact you are a responsible citizen. So, best not do that.

If weed is illegal in your state/local jurisdiction. No weed. They'll catch that for sure. It has a half-life of several to many days.

Good Luck,

Dear Mr CRONIN, I got really sorrow for a young fellow for taking anxiety medicine. IMO, nowadays the pharmacy industry classifying these type of illnesses as DISORDER rather than curable which everyone could get anxiety problem in his life.

How should i understand your respond 'WOW ' but a pink star for your both responds.

I just wanted to share life experience and agree that , could be , I am wrong with my suggestion..
